These MLB Players Played for Midwestern State in Wichita Falls
Remember when Midwestern State University had a baseball team?
Scroll Through to See Who From MSU Made it to the Big Leagues
Throughout the 1970's and 80's Midwestern State University had a baseball team. Back in 2012, actual talks were happening for the sport to come back to the school. Sadly, all these years later, MSU still doesn't have a baseball team. With the NCAA baseball season officially opening up today. Let's see who got drafted to the majors as an Indian (it's what they were called back then).
Larry Czeszewski (Drafted by the New York Mets)
Was a catcher and played in the minors for three minor league teams all called the Mets. He played in Kingsport, Little Falls, and Shelby. Apparently is still a baseball coach in the San Antonio area.
Mike Gobbo (Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers)
Played as a catcher for three different minor league organizations. The Stockton Ports, The Beloit Brewers, and the El Paso Diablos. Finished his baseball career in 1987.
Greg Griffin (Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays)
The outfielder would get drafted by our neighbors to the North, starting his career with the Medicine Hat Blue Jays (apparently they played in Alberta, Canada), then would play for the Knoxville Blue Jays, and would finish his career on Kinston Blue Jays in 1984.
Frank Rubio (Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies)
Can't find a photo of our first pitcher to make the list. Frank only played two seasons in the Phillies minor league organizations. Played for the Helena Phillies and Spartanburg Traders before calling it a career in 1982.
Benny Ruiz (Drafted by the Detroit Tigers)
Our most successful played to come out of Midwestern State University is infielder Benny Ruiz. Not only did he play the longest of anybody on our list (seven years in the minors). He's the only one to be a part of a trade. He was part of trade deal to the Cleveland Indians in the mid 80's. He would play for seven different minor league franchises throughout his career before retiring in 1989.
Charles Smith (Drafted by the California Angels)
Another player I can't find a photo for and probably for the fact he lasted one year in the minors. The Angels drafted him at first base in 1984, he would play for the Peoria Chiefs for one season.

That wraps up all the players from Midwestern State who got drafted by MLB teams. In conclusion, let's bring baseball back to Wichita Falls PLEASE! All info taken from Baseball Reference.
