Texas’ Most Historic Fast Food Joint Can be Found in Houston
If you’re looking to try the most historic fast food place in Texas, head to Houston. Love Food is always coming through with great places to add to the old restaurant bucket list. As a history buff who is always thinking with his stomach, I was stoked to come across their list of the most historic fast food joints in each state.
It feels like restaurants come and go all the time, but Lankford’s Grocery has withstood the test of time. It was founded by Aubrey and Nona Lankford as a ‘Mom and Pop’ grocery store near downtown Houston all the way back in 1937. In the 1980s, their daughter Eydie Lankford Prior took over and transitioned the grocery store into an icehouse, and then it eventually became a full-fledged restaurant.

The thing that’s really interesting about Lankford’s to me is just how big their menu is. You can get traditional American staples like burgers and hot dogs, but they also offer a wide variety of breakfast options from breakfast tacos to biscuits and gravy. Lankford’s also likes to mix things up with daily specials.
I’ve written about several Houston restaurants that offer some of the best grub on the planet over the years. While I don’t visit Space City very often, Lankford’s is currently sitting at the top of the list for the next time I’m in that neck of the woods.
