Throughout Wichita Falls history, we have had many sports teams. Probably the most successful was the original Wichita Falls Spudders from 1920–1932. They were the Texas League Champions in 1927 and in 1922 the team won twenty two consecutive games. The Spudders of the 20's were a force to be reckoned with. Throughout the years, three other Wichita Falls Spudders would exist from 1941–1942, 1947–1954, and finally from 1956–1957.
Babe Ruth's New York Yankees Once Lost to the Wichita Falls Spudders
The Wichita Falls fact that always blows my mind is Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees once played a baseball game in Wichita Falls. The crazy thing is, the Wichita Falls Spudders BEAT the New York Yankees on April 3, 1930. If you think I am making this up, here is the New York Times article from that date that proves it.
Wichita Falls Also Had a Black Spudders Team
Back in 1919 The Texas Colored League was formed and Wichita Falls had a team in that league starting in 1921. The Museum of North Texas History had an exhibit on the Wichita Falls Black Spudders and their history. More information is known on the other Wichita Falls Spudders, but if you're interested in the Black Spudders, you can read more about them here.
Official Historical Marker for Spudder Park
Coming up on February 13, 2025 an official ceremony will be taking place at 1PM to honor where both Wichita Falls Spudders teams played. The Wichita County Historical Commission and the Wichita Falls Alliance for Arts and Culture invite the public to attend this special event.

“The Official Texas Historical Marker program helps bring attention to community treasures and the importance of their preservation,” said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the THC. “Awareness and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of our state’s history. This designation is a tool that will increase public awareness of important cultural resources."
