The Longest Game in Texas High School Sports History Took Place Over the Weekend
The teams played the equivalent of 2.5 games over the weekend in one game.
The Beauty of Baseball
Nothing I love more than baseball because the game is never over. Parents and students learned that this past weekend at a game between Midland High School and Odessa High School.
Game Two Friday Between the Teams
The two schools were playing a three game series the past couple of days. On Friday was game two kicking off at 4:30 PM. Here is where things get interesting. On Friday night at 8:30 PM, the game was called. The baseball field didn't have enough lights to keep the game going on. Players were literally standing in darkness on certain parts of the field. Midland was winning the game at the time 3-2 in the top of the 14th inning.
Game Two Resumes Saturday at 3PM
Midland held a 3-2 lead on Friday night, but Odessa wasn't going to go down with out a fight. They tied the game up the next day and the two teams grinded it out for another NINE INNINGS. In the bottom of the 23rd inning, Midland was able to put away Odessa and win the game. This is officially the longest high school sporting event in Texas history. Only two other games in American high school sports history have gone longer, with one in 1967 and another in 1975 going 25 innings.
The Schools Still Had to Play Game Three on Saturday After This
After playing another nine innings of baseball on Saturday to finish out that second game. The schools still had to play another full game of baseball. Midland would also win this one and win the series 2-1. Odessa did win a game on Thursday before the crazy long game took place on Friday into Saturday. Shout out to the athletes, coaches, and parents who were along for that journey this weekend. I'm sure many thought that game was never going to end.
