Texans Say Wichita Falls Has The Historic Main Street They Most Want Restored
A recent study found that a historic main street right here in Wichita Falls is the one most Texans want to see revived. Interestingly, it’s part of a downtown revival project that’s been underway for years.
There’s just something about historic downtowns that draws me to them. I always make it a point to check out the downtown area when I’m visiting a town for the first time. I always wonder what kind of stories those old storefronts would have to tell if they could talk.

I’m an 80s kid who grew up in Vernon. We would come here and shop at the old Sears downtown for Christmas. For my money, that was the coolest store in town. However, like so many other towns, the commercial hub was shifting from downtown to the area around Sikes Senter Mall, and it remains that way to this day.
Fast-forward to the mid 2000s when my wife and I moved here, and the area had really gone downhill. My friends and I rented a jam pad downtown for our band Lycergus, but were eventually forced to find a new spot due to my van being broken into a couple of times...in broad daylight. Let’s just say it wasn’t the best part of town.
However, things have come a long way since then, thanks to Downtown Wichita Falls Development and others who are committed to revitalizing downtown. These days, it’s a thriving area with plenty of entertainment options, from bars to restaurants and more. Of course, there’s still plenty of work to be done.
And apparently, many Texans are anxious to see the area reach its full potential, as Indiana Avenue was the historic main street that most folks in the Lone Star State would like to see revived, according to a survey conducted by MarketBeat. And yes, you can count me in among those people.
