
Wichita Falls High Schools Will Start Wrestling Programs Next Year
Good news for youth sports in Wichita Falls. Both high schools will be starting wrestling programs in 2026.
Right now football is big in Wichita Falls. Especially with the Legacy and Memorial game on Friday night. The fall sports are starting to come to a close in the next few weeks, while the winter sports practices are getting underway. Next year around this time, wrestling practices will start to begin for the first time ever at our new Wichita Falls high schools.
WFISD Approves Purchase for Wrestling Equipment for Both Schools
KFDX reports that $182,023.04 will be spent to bring wrestling programs to both Legacy and Memorial. $75,257.52 will be spent at Memorial to get their program going, while $75,115.52 will be spent at Legacy to get their program going. The rest of the funds will be spent on a Smooth Flexi Wrestling Mat costing $31,650.
Wichita Falls Hosted Wrestling Tournament Back in January
After hosting a massive wrestling event for high school students in Texas at Kay Yeager Coliseum. The talks of Wichita Falls starting wrestling programs greatly elevated. Many were wondering why something like this is not available at our high schools in Wichita Falls. “A wrestling program is an investment that will increase participation of students in extra-curricular activities and provide more opportunities for our staff to impact the lives of our students,” said Dr. Donny Lee, Superintendent of Schools.
When Would Wrestling Start in Wichita Falls?
For any students interested in participating in this new sport for our area next year. Wrestling events would typically start around this time of the year and run through mid February. You can expect Legacy and Memorial to have signups in September of next year for any students interested in participating.
Texas UIL boys' wrestling has 14 weight classes:106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, and 285 pounds.
Texas UIL girls' wrestling uses the NFHS weight classes, which include 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185, and 235 pounds.
