Growing up nowadays, a kid having a cell phone is no big deal. What is a big deal is when kids are on those phones during the school day. One Texas mom went viral on TikTok this week for having to pay a fine for her child getting caught with a cellphone in class.
$15 Fine for Using Phone During School
TikTok user @briwithtwoes uploaded a video that has since amassed over one million views. She claims her son's school has a fine of $15 if the student is caught with their phone out in class. The phone is returned once the fine is paid. I was curious what the policy is for our local schools in Wichita Falls and turns out it is EXACTLY the same as this.
WFISD Rules on Cell Phones in School
According to the Cell Phone and Electronic Device policy. Students are allowed to use their electronic devices in common areas and during transition times throughout the school day.
Students who do not follow the teacher’s instructional plan for the day, i.e., have their cell phone or electronic device out will have it confiscated by the teacher and handed to administration. If any device is confiscated and turned in to administration there will be a $15 fee associated with the return of the device. Students/parents who do not wish to pay the $15 fee may request to stay outside of the school day under a staff member’s supervision for a cumulative two hours. This time may be spent by assisting a staff member, attend tutorials, or complete missing work. All devices may be returned at the end of the day upon payment or AFTER the two hours have been completed by the student.
So it looks like this is actually a pretty common thing at Texas schools. Briee's TikTok has a lot of people thinking this is ridiculous. Let me know what you think about the policy.
