Known as "The gentleman of Wichita Falls", a special ceremony will be happening in Harold Jones Park this weekend to honor the racing legend.

Lloyd Ruby 1928-2009

Wichita Falls is home to some awesome racing legends. You have probably seen the name Lloyd Ruby when you driving down Highway 287 and go over the Lloyd Ruby Overpass. However, you may not know all the crazy things this guy did on the racetrack back in the day. He maybe most famous for the endurance races he participated in.

Ever Heard of the 24 Hours of Daytona?

Back in 1966, a new event started to kick off the racing world every year. A 24 hour endurance to see how a team could handle driving around the iconic Daytona Motorspeedway. Lloyd Ruby and Ken Miles won the first ever 24 Hours of Daytona back in 1966. The duo would also win the 12 Hours at Sebring the very same year.

The Indianapolis 500 Career

Sadly the won thing Lloyd Ruby never did was win the Indianapolis 500. A biography on Lloyd Ruby came out in 2000 titled "Lloyd Ruby: The Greatest Driver Never to Win the Indy 500." He lead the Indianapolis 500 throughout his career for 126 laps in five different races. His best finish at Indianapolis was third, in 1964. His only other top-five finish at Indy came in 1968. You can watch the 1969 video above where at the 48 minute mark Lloyd leaves a pit stop with the fuel line still attached and ruptures his gas tank. Many believe if this didn't happen, Lloyd would have won the Indianapolis 500. "I don't believe Lady Luck is ever on my side at this place," Lloyd said during a post race interview in 1969.
