This is the Least Desired Job in Texas
A recent study determined the least desired job in every state and the result for Texas might surprise you.
I love my job. Not everyone gets to spend their days creating online content and talking on the radio. So, I don’t take it for granted.
But it took me a long time to get to where I’m at.
I was in my mid-30s when I first started as a part-time radio board op. And while being a board op isn’t the most desirable position in the radio business, it beats the hell out of every other job I worked (many of which I liked, by the way).
That was not quite 16 years ago, so I still remember what it’s like to be in the job market. And there was a point where I would have done just about anything to get by. Notice I said just about anything.
Because there are some jobs that I wouldn’t do for any amount of money.
For instance, there is no way in hell that I would ever consider being a skyscraper window washer. Heights freak me out so bad that I would probably have a heart attack on the first day of the job. I’m not alone in that. The study found skyscraper window washer to be the least desired job in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Washington.
But I have to admit the result for Texas is a bit of a head-scratcher for me.
As a lifelong resident of the Lone Star State, I know many people who have worked in the oilfield, and they all seemed to like it – mostly because it paid well. Being a roughneck isn’t for everyone, but if you have what it takes, you can live comfortably.
That’s why I was surprised to learn that oil rig worker was found to be the least desired job in the state...even for double the pay.
Oil rig work is a prevalent yet highly undesirable career choice in states like California, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas. The dangerous working conditions, remote locations, and the potential for catastrophic accidents make this job particularly unappealing, despite the high pay often associated with the oil industry.
Far be it from me to argue with the results of the study. But I can think of a lot of jobs that are less desirable than working in the oilfield.
