Wichita Falls Court Filing Shows Texas and Florida Suing the FDA
Looks like Texas and Florida are teaming up to take on the FDA over an abortion pill in the Wichita Falls court system.
Looks like last week a lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of Texas, Wichita Falls division. The full 120 page lawsuit can be read in full here. Basically Florida and Texas are suing the FDA, The Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Martin A. Makary (Commissioner of Food and Drugs), Richard Pazdur (Director of Center for Drug Evaluation and Research), and finally Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Secretary of Health and Human Services Department.
Lawsuit Claims Abortion Pill is Not Safe for Women to Use
The lawsuit specifically mentions Mifepristone, which is the first pill you take to terminate a pregnancy, followed by a second pill called Misoprostol. It is estimated that 60% of the abortions in the United States are done using these drugs. Missouri and Louisiana also have similar lawsuits ongoing with the federal government at this time.
Why File This Lawsuit Now?
It looks like generic versions of Mifepristone were approved in September of this year and the lawsuit claims more testing on these pills need to be done before they should go out to the general public. I mentioned earlier the 120 page lawsuit, it has a lot of legal mumbo jumbo in it that I don't understand. You can get a breakdown of the lawsuit here.
New Texas Abortion Pill Law Went Into Effect December 4th
Texas House Bill 7 just went into effect a few weeks ago. It creates civil penalties for health care providers who make abortion medications available in Texas, allowing any private citizen to sue medical providers for a minimum penalty of $100,000. You can read more on that new bill here.
