Watch: Stunning Time-Lapse Video of a Supercell Over Texas
How can something so destructive be so beautiful?
Storm clouds have always been a double-edged sword for me. They’re equal parts frightening and fascinating.
Even though I witnessed the destructive force of a tornado firsthand as a child, I never developed an intense fear of storms. I have to go outside and take a look when the sky starts to darken before heading for shelter.
It has been a particularly active storm season this year. We’re used to dealing with severe weather in this neck of the woods in spring and early summer. But we’ve had more stormy days than nice days here lately.
Yesterday was one of the stormiest days of the year here in North Texas (and that’s saying something).
Severe thunderstorms started rolling through the Wichita Falls area around noon and continued late into the afternoon. Those storms brought lightning and hail with them, but thankfully, no tornadoes.
Not that those storms didn’t try their best to produce a tornado. The time-lapse video below shows a supercell near Decatur rotating but a tornado never forms. The storm eventually produced baseball-sized hail.
If the forecast holds up, we could be in for more severe weather in the coming days. Stay safe out there.
