This week I'm going with Kvelertak's self-titled debut album. The band offers an interesting mix of modern metal, black metal and punk and it works so well for me. The best way I can describe their style is if a band like Baroness or Mastodon were from Norway this is probably how they would sound. All of the lyrics are in Norwegian but the band is cool enough to give a short English description of what each song is about in the liner notes. The opening track "Ulvetid" offers up driving post-hardcore riffs mixed with a hint of black metal atmosphere to really set the stage for what is a great listen front to back. I think this album will definitely top a lot of metalheads end of year lists...it'll certainly be close to the top of mine. So far my faves are "Ulvetid", "Offernatt" and "Liktorn".
