Since the Doomsday Clock was recently set the closest to midnight it has ever been, let’s examine just how safe Texas would be in the event of a nuclear war.

I realize this is one of the most depressing subjects on the planet. As an 80s kid, I grew up under what felt like the constant threat of a nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union.

And then the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, signaling the end of the Cold War. I remember an instant feeling of relief. Unfortunately, the threat of nuclear war never fully went away and here we are, closer than ever (according to a group of scientists, anyway).

So, I came across a map that showed the "safest” states to be in during a nuclear attack. I say “safest” because nowhere would truly be safe in the event of a nuclear exchange, no matter how large or small.

According to the map, Texas would be somewhat “safe” during a nuclear attack, depending on the wind speed and direction. The map is based on a simulated attack on a specific day in 2021, using its weather patterns.

The simulation assumed the attack would only target missile silos in the heartland – Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana. I think that is wishful thinking. It’s widely believed that a nuclear attack would also focus on eliminating much of the population by striking our biggest cities.

Ultimately, our best bet is that cooler heads prevail and realize there are no winners in a nuclear war.
