Stryker Road Trips to Try Out the New GWARbar [PHOTOS + VIDEO]
I was home in Baltimore for Magfest and I remembered that the all new GWARbar just opened up. It's only a two and half hour drive. Was it worth the trip? Hell yes!
I got some video of what the GWARbar looks like and an interview with my awesome server. Check that out in the video above.
I also took pictures of pretty much everything I ate and drank at the amazing GWARbar. It's located in Richmond, Virginia and yes I made this road trip after Magfest just try to try this place out. It's smaller than I imagined it would be, but that does not hurt it at all. It has a nice neighborhood bar feel to it. Now let's get into the menu.
I definitely ate a lot off of this bad boy and we will be getting into that later.
Everything sounded so good and looking at the food coming out of the kitchen, it all looked good.
Now this being a bar and driving several hours, I needed a beer. GWARbar has an amazing selection, plus some amazing tiki drinks. Yeah, I definitely tried one of them later.
I regret not buying the Buzz bomb for the name alone, my bad BuzzHeads.
Let me get all emotional for you right now. If you have lived in Texas your whole life, you probably have not heard about Natty Boh. Growing up in Maryland, this is your beer of choice. I knew some of the border states around Maryland had Natty Boh and I was amazed to find it here. Being the Marylander I am, it would have felt wrong not to start the night off right with a Natty Boh. Whoever is in charge of ordering the beer at GWARbar, THANK YOU.
Let's get to the food, started the night off with some Chicken McDuckgets. That's right, chicken and duck meat in one delicious nugget. I am willing to say, probably the best nuggets I have ever had in my life.
Screw it, let's order another appetizer. I am always in the mood for wings, so let's check out GWARbar's version with their wangs. Turns out you can get duck and they have a lot of sauces to try out. It would have felt wrong not to try the GWARBBQ sauce. It was really good and the duck wangs were perfect.
Around this time my Natty Boh was getting low, decided to try out one of their signature tiki drinks. Asked my amazing server for a recommendation and she said that 'Zombie Madness' was their most popular. It was really good and I got this awesome cup, which is currently proudly displayed in the 106.3 the Buzz studio.
Time to order some real food. I was in the mood for a sandwich, once again went with the servers recommendation and I got the 'grilled pustulus'. Which is the most high class grilled cheese I have ever had in my life. Since I have the maturity of an elementary school kid, I had to get it with a side of tater tots. Great, typing this out, my stomach is now growling.
Remember I drove two and half hours to GWARbar. I wanted to stuff my face for the long trip back home. So decided to try out a classic bar snack. Pork rinds or as they call them 'red skins'. I don't think I have ever had fresh pork rinds in my life. They were served with some awesome hot sauce, they went perfect with the rest of my tiki drink.
You have to order dessert, right? Unfortunately they were all out of their homemade GWARbar Twinkies. That's right homemade Twinkies, THOSE EXIST?! Decided to order a snowball for the final food of the night. It was delicious, but still mad I missed out on one of my favorite guilty pleasure foods.
I did order one more drink at GWARbar and I apologize I forgot to take a picture of it. It was their own draft beer, called GWARblood. Pretty damn good, it's a darker beer. If I had to compare it to another beer, maybe a Killian's Irish Red.
So final thoughts, I wish this bar was in our town. It was so awesome and just seemed like a great place to go get a beer with your friends. If you're ever in the Virginia area here is what I would recommend. Go to Kings Dominion during the day. It's an amusement park that is only two exits away from GWARbar, and in my opinion, the best theme park on the east coast. Then after the theme park go relax and get some good drinks at GWARbar.
Oh yeah, one more thing. I left a little piece of the Buzz in the GWARbar bathroom. Rock on!
