Why I’m Still Skeptical of Self-Driving Cars in Texas

I made it very clear that I’m in no hurry to catch a ride in a Waymo self-driving taxi while writing about its expansion in Texas earlier this year. Call me old-fashioned, but I would rather have another living, breathing human whose life is on the line behind the wheel instead of a lifeless robot.

That said, I am very well aware of the fact that they have been proven to be safe. To echo the thoughts of many of the people commenting on the video below, there are way more accidents involving humans than self-driving cars. In fact, there’s a good chance the person behind the wheel of the black car is at fault in the incident.

But still, I’m set in my ways. However, that could change eventually. I was skeptical of Uber in its infancy as well. I had my questions as to how well they vetted their drivers compared to taxi companies, which, admittedly, was unfounded. I’ve used Uber many times since, so there’s that.
