The City Prosecutor gave a presentation on the American Staffordshire Terrier or as you probably know it Pit Bull. The table shown during the meeting shows how many dog incidents the city has gone through over the past fifteen years.
Lawton Dog Incidents Since 2009
The City Prosecutor claims that 90% of these cases involve pit bulls. The city claims the recent increase in attacks is due to four reasons, according to KSWO.
- Poor fencing and enclosures
- Lack of supervision by the owner
- Lack of discipline by owner
- The “natural behavior” of the breed
From the table the city provided, dog incidents appear to be way down from what they were before 2022. Also according to the Oklahoma Senate, a breed specific ban is illegal in Oklahoma.
Potentially dangerous or dangerous dogs may be regulated through local, municipal and county authorities, provided the regulations are not breed specific. Nothing in this act shall prohibit such local governments from enforcing penalties for violation of such local laws.
Info is taken from Oklahoma Statutes - Title 4. Animals Page 24 if anyone on the Lawton City Council would like to follow the law in the state.
