We are one week into the new year. Is that resolution to get in shape already out the window? Don't give up and I'll tell you what you need to do.

If you're looking to lose weight or just be healthier in general, here are five simple tips I used when I started my weight loss journey.

    K.I.S.S.

    Keep...It...Simple...Stupid

Don't have some lavish unattainable goal for this year. For our example today, we're going to use lose weight. Set your goals for how much weight you want to lose in 2017. Don't say something ridiculous like 300 pounds. If you're overweight, let's say a pound a week. By the end of the year, you got 52 pounds down, which is possible.

    Treat Yourself

I am a big advocate for cheat meals. Once and I do mean only once a week. Go have a cheat meal that's out of the norm of your diet. If you have something you loved, but you can't eat it on your diet. Enjoy it once a week. I look forward to my fast food run during the week while I'm on my diet.

    Make Notes of your Progress

Grab a notebook and keep track of your goals. See how things are going on a month to month basis. If you're doing cardio or weights, keep a daily track of what you did for that. Maybe you had the energy to go that extra mile or bump that weight up another level. It's all about improving yourself.

    Don’t give up!

This one is key and just picture me in your head yelling at you. It may seem impossible some days to keep that diet or put that work in the gym. I promise you that you can do it. Take a deep breath and say 'I got this!' You will thank yourself later for pushing through those tough days.

    Find What Works for You

Find a gym, diet plan and workout schedule that works for you. Talk to someone that knows what you're wanting to do. If you're trying to lose weight, your diet is not going to be similar to someone trying to put on muscle.
