What goes through a pilot's mind when their landing gear isn't working? One had to deal with that very scenario when trying to land at Arlington Municipal Airport this week. The pilot went through all the procedures of trying to get it down, but it would not budge. He was able to radio into the Arlington tower and notify them of the emergency situation. Thanks to the Arlington Fire Department, they were able to use foam to coat the runway.
Firefighting foam is a foam used for fire suppression. Its role is to cool the fire and to coat the fuel, preventing its contact with oxygen, thus achieving suppression of the combustion. According to Wikipedia, the use of foam to help land an airplane is actually not that common anymore. The main risk in a landing like this is the plane flipping over. Thankfully that did not happen during this situation. All three passengers aboard the plane landed safely and with no injuries.
FAA Plans to Investigate Today
As with any plane crash, the Federal Aviation Administration will be doing an investigation as to how the landing gear malfunctioned. Emergency landings like this are extremely rare in aviation nowadays. Most of the time a plane has to make an emergency landing due to a passenger having a medical emergency on board. The FAA says that happens in about 1 of every 604 flights per year.
