Here’s a little something to keep in mind the next time you feel like breaking the speed limit in Texas.

Look, I get it – sometimes you just feel the need for speed. I would drag race my friends on country roads outside of my hometown of Vernon quite often when I was a younger man. However, not so much anymore.

That’s not to say that I haven’t mashed the old gas pedal from time to time since. But I tend to be pretty careful to drive within the speed limit. As a result (knock on wood), I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket, which is a good thing considering I live in Texas.

Texas Has Some of the Highest Speeding Fines

That’s because speeding ticket fines are among the highest in the country here in the Lone Star State. According to a new report from FinanceBuzz, Texas has the fourth-highest speeding ticket fines at $245 for going 15 mph over the speed limit. Wow.

To put it in context, the lowest speeding ticket fine in the country is $30 for going 15 mph over the speed limit just to the west of us in New Mexico. That’s a speed demon’s dream come true.

Now, because I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy, on the bright side, at least we don’t live in Nevada, the state with the highest speed ticket fines in the nation. Folks out there who are caught going 15 mph over the speed limit can look forward to being fined a whopping $290.

Consider yourself warned.
