Texas Is Number One In the Country For Least Amount of Skin Cancer

Wow, that is really surprising. Considering how brutal that sun is here in Texas during the summer.

A new survey from the US Environmental Protection Agency has determined which states have the highest amount of people diagnosed with skin cancer. I was shocked to see Texas ranked at the top for having the least amount of people diagnosed. Then I started to think about. If you get a sunburn once here in Texas, you always will load up on sunscreen next time. Those Texas sunburns are something else.

Three factors went into the ranking system. First, how many people get diagnosed in your state, per 100,000 residents. For Texas, 12.6 people get diagnosed for every 100,000 residents in our state. For the number one, it is actually Utah. 42.3 people per every 100,000 residents.

Next up, is how many skin cancer-related deaths do you have in your state per year for every 100,000 residents. For Texas, it is 2.2. Which is the fourth lowest in the entire country. Hawaii actually has the lowest with 1.1 deaths per 100,000 residents.

The final factor is the white population percentage in your state. White people have more of a chance of getting certain skin cancers like melanoma. Texas has a white population percentage of 42%, which is the fourth lowest in the country. Hawaii also leads this category, with the smallest white population at 22.1%.

The reason Hawaii didn't win is their annual report of people getting diagnosed with skin cancer. That number 20.3 people per 100,000 residents. I just thought this was a very interesting survey and something I didn't expect Texas to have the least of in the country.
