People get behind the wheel after they've been drinking in every small town and major city in the country. But a Texas city leads the nation in DUI-related fatal crashes.

If you know me, you know I’m always down for a couple of drinks. Admittedly, I don’t hit bars like I did when I was younger. But when I do go out for a drink, I make sure to limit how much I drink or get an Uber or catch a ride from a sober person when I’ve had too much.

The Dangerous Illusion of “Feeling Fine”

That said, I’m far from perfect. I know how easy it is to feel like you’re fine to drive when in reality, it would be best to let someone else do the driving. So, I’m not here to preach, just to simply share the findings of a new report by LendingTree.

I remember the old saying in Texas was “DWI - You Can’t Afford It.” And while the saying was alluding to the massive fines and fees associated with being arrested for driving while intoxicated, the highest cost of a DWI (or DUI) is the loss of life.

Texas Cities Lead the Nation in DUI Fatal Crashes

Unfortunately, El Paso has the highest percentage of fatal crashes involving drunk driving in the country. On top of that, Fort Worth, Houston, Dallas, and Arlington were among the 10 U.S. cities with the highest percentage of DUI-related fatalities.

As the report says, it’s hard to pinpoint why Texas has such a high percentage of drunk driving fatalities, but each of us can do our part to solve the problem by catching a sober ride after partying a little too hard.
