Petition Filed in Oklahoma to Legalize Recreational Marijuana
Medical marijuana is already legal in the state, we will see where this new petition goes.
Oklahoma City residents Vanessa Brandon Avery and Amy Young have filed a petition to get recreational marijuana legalized in the state. They will need 178,000 signatures for this amendment to get on the ballot. Similar petitions have failed in the past, but the state has since legalized medical marijuana use so maybe this time it will pass.
This is what they want State Question 806 to be. It allows those 21 years old and older to use recreational marijuana. The measure maintains prohibitions on impaired driving. It would allow employers to restrict use. It would also let property owners restrict use on their properties.
The measure imposes a 15 percent excise tax on it. It allows cities, upon a vote, to limit or prohibit retail licenses. Here maybe the biggest part of this new potential constitutional amendment. It creates a judicial process for people to seek modification, reversal, re-designation or expungement of some prior marijuana sentences.
This is just the first step in the process, we will see how it goes.
