The New Orleans Hornets are expected to take up a new moniker in the next few seasons changing their mascot from Hornets to the much less intimidating Pelicans within the next few years. The major franchise overhaul is expected as early as 2013. The team, which moved from Charlotte in 2001, has used the Hornet as a mascot since the franchise began play in 1988. The teams owner, Tom Benson who also owns the NOLA Saints, evidently chose Pelicans from a list that included other obscure mascot names such as Krewes, and Brass. Benson's wife let slip to reporters she would like to see the team's color scheme change to navy blue, red, and gold.  If you are wondering why the pelican was Benson's bird of choice you are not alone. It turns out that after I did hours (or minutes) of tedious research (typed it in to google) I discovered that the majestic brown pelican is the state bird of Louisiana, and evidently (I double checked with yahoo maps)  that is where New Orleans is. Personally I think this choice is all wrong for the New Orleans NBA Franchise. Therefore I have taken it upon myself to compile a list of my 5 favorite mascot/name alternatives. Please feel free to leave a comment with your own suggestion.
