The first time Metallica performed in Buffalo, N.Y., was on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1983. While they were touring the country on their Kill 'Em All For One tour, they stopped by Buffalo to open for Motörhead at Rooftop Skyroom on Seneca Street. Tickets were $8 at the door and Metallica put together an intense 10-song set, opening with "Hit the Lights" and closing the night with "Motorbreath."

Since that gig, they've performed at many different spots in Erie County, swinging by the KeyBank Center on Oct. 27, 2018, on their WorldWired tour in support of Hardwired...to Self-Destruct.

It took nearly another four years for Metallica to make their way back to Buffalo on Aug. 11, 2022—almost 39 years to the day from that first Buffalo show—but as the tens of thousands of fans who witnessed their return can attest to, it was worth the wait. With the help of openers Ice Nine Kills and Greta Van Fleet, Metallica packed out Highmark Stadium for a night of nonstop rock and roll.

Whether you were there or not, you can now re-live the moment over and over thanks to Metallica's impressive, ongoing archival efforts. You can stream and download the complete concert at LiveMetallica.com or via nugs.net.

Opening with "Whiplash"—a song Metallica hadn't played in Buffalo since 1994—the night's setlist mirrored many of Metallica's shows throughout the year, with one notable exception: Instead of opening their encore with "Battery" or "Damage, Inc.," they decided to pull out "Blackened" from ...And Justice For All. This was only the second time they performed it live in 2022.

Some of Our Favorite Live Photos of Kirk Hammett

Kirk Hammett is a shredder, plain and simple. Or more specifically, he's a ripper. The Ripper.

Whether you're listening to him ripping or watching videos or staring at photos, one thing is obvious: this guy is a six-string master. While we could never create a collection that covers Hammett's entire history with Metallica, we've picked a handful of some of our favorite photos over the last 20 years showing the guitarist rocking out and having fun.

Some of Our Favorite Live Photos of Lars Ulrich

As iconic as James Hetfield is, as much of a shredder as Kirk Hammett is and as crazy as Robert Trujillo is onstage, there might be no member more associated with Metallica than Lars Ulrich.

Afterall, he's the reason the band even exists. He's a major part of the songwriting process. He's the voice that stood up for Metallica and musicians across the globe in the wake of Napster.

After hours and hours of rifling through photos of Ulrich, we whittled this list down to just a few of our favorite live shots from the last 20 years. Of course, there's no way to encapsulate Ulrich in a mere photograph, but as you will no doubt be able to tell, you can get pretty close.
