We're nearing the end of the regular season of college football. As of right now five Texas colleges are in the top 25. That would be Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Texas at Austin, University of North Texas, and University of Houston. A lot to be proud of in the great state of Texas when it comes to football. For us in Wichita Falls, one of the kids who grew up playing high school here, is getting national attention.

Gus Johnson calls games for Fox and he shows love to a player in college football every week. These players have a passion and expertise in football. Basically they have it, which is tough to define, but you know it when you see it. Gus says Jacob Rodriquez was that player in college football for week 12.

Jacob's signature mustache has earned him a very cool nickname from Gus Johnson. Jacob has started every game this season for Tech. He has racked up 100 tackles, seven forced fumbles, six pass breakups, four interceptions and one sack. Jacob has helped Texas Tech become the third ranked defense in the country.
Jacob Was the Quarterback for a Play on Saturday
Here in Wichita Falls, we're used to seeing Jacob as the quarterback (or free safety) for the Rider Raiders. Tech is trying to get Jacob some Heisman attention, so he lined up at quarterback on Saturday and ran in an offensive touchdown. So much for Jacob just being a defensive superstar, he can score on offense as well.
Jacob Rodriquez Enters Top Ten for Heisman Trophy Odds
According to USA Today, Jacob is officially a top ten candidate for the most prestigious player award in college football. Despite not being ranked all season, Jacob currently has the ninth best odds to win this year. He's currently listed at (+12500). The best odds are current Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza at (-115). We will wait and see who wins the award in December. If Jacob keeps it up, looks like he will at the very least be asked to New York for the ceremony.
