Fireworms Starting to Pop Up in Texas

Hopefully you have never felt the pain of accidentally stepping on a fire ant mound while mowing your yard in Texas. If you're not paying attention, you know how much those suckers hurt when they bite you. At their peak, those mounds can have 200,000 ants inside and they're pissed when you take out a section of their mound. Today I learned that fire worms are starting to pop out in Texas and I had no idea they existed.
Fire Worms on the Texas Gulf Coast
Obviously when you take a trip to the beach, you have to be aware of all the creatures you could encounter. Sharks, jellyfish, and other random creatures could be in the ocean while you're swimming. Turns out another thing you have to look out for is fireworms. They technical term for them is bearded fireworms. The worms were recently found on Mustang Island and Padre Island here in Texas. They apparently like to feast on barnacles.

They say you do not want to step on or touch one of these things with your bare hands. The bristles you see on their sides are a defense mechanism. They will embed into your skin and have a toxin that creates a burning sensation that will last hours. So be careful where you step on your next trip to the beach.
