Over the weekend it was the annual Hotter'N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls. Where thousands of folks took part in the annual ride throughout Texoma. The Hotter'N Hell Hundred got it's start in 1982 to celebrate the centennial of Wichita Falls and it looks like the show 'The Eyes of Texas' showed our annual ride some love in 1988.
"Living in Wichita Falls Was One of the Worst Things to Happen to You In Texas"
Back in the day, Wichita Falls had an image problem. Seriously, Wichita Falls was one of the most hated cities in the state. This reputation quickly spread thanks to a Texas Monthly article in 1978 that described the worst jobs you could have in Texas. Things like working on the highway or working at a meat rendering plant in the Texas summers were not surprising to see. However, "just being a resident of Wichita Falls, Texas" was considered one of the worst jobs in the state.
Check Out "Father Hotter" Himself, Roby Christie
Someone that has been a part of the Hotter'N Hell Hundred since the beginning is Roby Chrsitie. In the show, he talks about the origin of the 100 mile bike ride and how back in the day the city of Wichita Falls almost did a rocking chair marathon instead. Speaking on behalf of everyone in Wichita Falls, THANK GOD we did not do a 100 hour rocking chair marathon.
This Guy Rode the Hotter'N Hell Hundred with One Leg
While I was watching the video, I noticed this guy doing the ride with one leg. Hats off to you sir whoever you are.
It Was in Fact Hotter'N Hell in 1988
I believe this past weekend our high was 107 degrees. So not too much of a difference between 1988 and today.
