Wichita Falls on the Hot Seat for Texas Education Agency Takeover
Looks like the Texas Education Agency has their eyes on five under performing school districts in the state and sadly one of them is Wichita Falls.
Every year, the Texas Education Agency grades school districts throughout the state and Friday the results were released for the 2024-2025 school year. Five districts in total were announced by the Texas Education Agency as having consecutive under performing grades. Connally, Lake Worth, Beaumont, Wichita Falls and Fort Worth.
Which WFISD Schools are Underperforming?
According to Dr. Donny Lee, Superintendent with the WFISD, several schools in the district received a grade of D or below.
- Memorial High School: D
- Legacy High School:F
- Hirschi Middle School: D
- Booker T. Washington Elementary: D
- Southern Hills Elementary: F
If you want to see your child's school score, it is public information on the Texas Education Agency website.
What Happens to These Schools in Wichita Falls Now?
Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath has made no decisions yet on the future of any of these districts. However, once you fail consecutively, you're on their radar and changes need to be made. They could opt to replace the school board that has been elected by the people, they can also shut down under performing schools. According to the Texas Tribune, the state has replaced a district’s school board and superintendent with a board of managers about 10 times since 2000.
Kirby Middle School Was Forced to Shut Down After Low Grades
Kirby Middle School had their final school year in 2023. The school was merged with Hirschi. Back in 2023, Dr. Lee said, “They’ll say that they are going to shut down but shut down means they’ll take the students from Hirschi and move them around in the district. So, in the future, we’re looking at possibly having Hirschi Middle School, Barwise Middle School, and McNiel Middle School. They would shuffle those students to Barwise and McNiel.”
We will wait and see what the plan is to get these grades to improve in Wichita Falls.
