If you see smoke rising in Wichita Falls, this is all planned and the city is trying to get the word out there not to panic.

Living in Wichita Falls we have all been conditioned to do our part when we see fire or smoke. Wichita Falls has had some brutally dry conditions throughout the years and a fire can quickly spread. Thankful we have rain in the forecast this weekend, however next week we do have a controlled burn that the city will be doing off Southwest Parkway.

The City of Wichita Falls released a statement saying over the next few weeks, you may see fires or smoke in a section of town behind Rosemont Cemetery off Southwest Parkway. They're scheduled to take place from 8AM-5PM. The Wichita Falls Fire Department will be in the area to ensure the fire stays where it is supposed to go.

Be Prepared for Smoke to Spread if Wind Picks Up

The City of Wichita Falls said if winds exceed 10MPH, this will carry the smoke to other parts of town and no need to panic. However, if those winds were to carry an ember to another part of town, outside of this area, residents should call 911 immidiatly to report the fire.

Why Does Wichita Falls Do Controlled Burns?

Most of the time, our burns are used for wildfire prevention. To some it sounds stupid, using fire, to prevent wildfires? A controlled burn will take care of dead underbrush and dry grass, controlled burns reduce the fuel available for wildfires, making them less likely to start and less intense if they do ignite.

The Wichita Falls Fire Department could also use this as a tool for wildfire training, but the city did not say that this was for a training exercise. We will wait and see how the controlled burns go over the next few weeks.
