Good News Wichita Falls Parking Lots, Birds to Start Migrating Out of Texas
Some parts of Wichita Falls look like a horror movie with the birds taking over the parking lots. Pretty soon you will start seeing less and less.
If you have ever wondered why so many birds takeover our Wichita Falls parking lots during this time of the year. That is because the bird species known as the grackle, is migrating to our area during the winter. During this time, our parking lots turn into a bird poop nightmare.
Turns out this species is attracted to artificial lights that are used to light parking lots all over town. You may have noticed Sikes Senter Mall uses a blue light in their parking lots to try and deter the birds from congregating. Grackles also stick together as a species, they believe in safety in numbers which is why it feels like hundreds of them takeover our parking lots.
The post above from Urban Bird Services said that help is on the way for our bird/poop epidemic that happens around this time of the year. Flocks of grackles begin arriving at most breeding locations between mid-February and early March. So if you're wondering where the birds are going, they're going to their breeding locations. Which are more north of us.
Although our area does have some grackles that are native to the south. Many from the area in pink/red area in northern part of The United States, flock to our area during the winter months. Looks like we will start seeing less and less of the northern grackles as this month goes on.
So if you get bird poop on your car every time you go park somewhere in Wichita Falls. Good news, less birds will be in town before you know it.
