At what point should a child be handcuffed or maybe, should we be handcuffing children at all?

When a kid is throwing a temper tantrum and throwing stuff. What should you do as an adult in that situation? You should do your best to try to calm the kid down, but let's face it. That rarely works, I usually just let them burn themselves out until they're done. As a teacher, you probably shouldn't do that.

In the Belton Indepedent School District, they were having lunch at one elementary school. One student was making fun of another one and was asked to move to a different table. That is when the temper tantrum started. The child then started to shove trays and throw chairs. He was taken to the principals office at this point.

In the office, he began to scream, hit, kick and throw more items such as books and chairs. An officer was called to the office and she was unable to subdue the child. The decision was made to put the child in handcuffs. Turns out the child suffers from ADHD and was having an 'emotional crisis'.

"While we are continuing to investigate this incident, I want to apologize to the student and the student’s family. It is not our practice to call the police for unruly elementary students,” the superintendent said in a statement.

“The student continued to respond in a manner that placed himself and others at risk of possible injury. In an effort to prevent the student from injuring himself or others he was placed in restraints." said Officer Neely. “While it is not our standard practice to place a student in restraints, the officer felt it necessary in order to prevent the possibility of injury to the student and staff.”

The boy's mother is not happy about her son being placed in handcuffs. Honestly, I don't think any parent would want to see their kid in handcuffs. "ADHD is a mental illness," the boy's mother told the news station. "How are you going to add now this trauma on top of an already existing mental illness is beyond me."

So basically what I am asking today. At what point should a kid be placed in handcuffs? I personally don't think never is the answer. I am not saying the cops were right or wrong. I was not in the office on this day. I don't know how crazy the kid was actually going. This is a tough one if you ask me.
