Dallas Mavericks General Manager Once Ruined a Multi-Million Dollar Nike Deal
Dallas Mavericks fans are frustrated at their general manager over a decision he made over the weekend. Looks like he has history of pissing people off.
Luka Doncic Traded from the Dallas Mavericks
In what maybe the most shocking move of my sports life, Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison elected to trade the 25-year-old face of the franchise to the Los Angeles Lakers. People are trying to process this trade even days later because nothing like this has ever happened before to a player so young on a team that was LITERALLY in the championship series last year. Over the weekend, Nico Harrison said he made the decision solely on his own and this has lead to Dallas Mavericks fans digging into his past. Turns out Nico's decisions have not always been the best.
Nico Once Cost Nike a Deal With Steph Curry
Let's go back to year 2013, Steph Curry is in his fourth year in the NBA and is starting to become a big name in the league. At the time he had not won a championship, but was one of the bigger players in the league. Nike Executive Niko Harrison was in charge of trying to sign the young superstar and offered him a shoe deal for 2.5 Million. Under Armour was competing with Nike to sign him and offered him 4 million. Steph really wanted to sign with Nike, even though it was less money. Well a presentation from Nico Harrison ruined the deal.
Nico Butchers His Interview with Steph Curry
During a meeting of trying to get the deal done with Nike, their executive running the meeting was Nico Harrison. He apparently kept calling Steph, Seth. Which is actually the name of his younger brother. Simple mistake that I wouldn't fault anybody for. The next mistake Nico made is excusable. Allegedly during the presentation, the photos showed by Nike had pictures of Kevin Durant, instead of Steph. Nico or someone on his team just used an old presentation to try and lure the young superstar. It didn't work and Steph would sign with Under Armour. Under Armour estimates they make $250 million dollars A YEAR with the Curry brand. Sports Illustrated originally ran this story about Nico and it's going re-viral after this Mavericks trade.
This is "Win Now" Move on Trading Luka Doncic
According to Nico, the next three to four years will be crucial to the Mavericks winning a championship. We will have to wait and see if this works out. Currently, I do not see how trading a MVP caliber player for the past five years who is only twenty five years old helps this team win a championship. If this doesn't work out, I imagine Nico will have lost any NBA job for the rest of his life. As of right now, it's being called the worst trade in NBA history.
