This past April was the wettest April in Wichita Falls history. We needed the rain, but with that comes another headache. Mosquitos!

I have stolen this quote from Johnny Thrash multiple times and he's completely right about it. 'The stages of Wichita Falls are flood, drought, repeat.' We either get no rain or all the rain at once. Currently we're in the flood stage with several parts of Wichita Falls underwater. Wichita Falls got 10.32 inches of rain in April which beat out the previous record in 1957 of 8.5 inches.

Of course Wichita Falls needed the rain with our lake levels over the past few months. However, what no one wants to hear is more mosquitos are on the way. The Wichita County Health District shared with these flood waters in our area this is the perfect breeding ground for a larger more aggressive mosquito. AWESOME!

Apparently our area has on average thirteen different species of mosquitos and this particular breed love floodwaters. With all the flooded areas in Oklahoma and Texas recently, these things are about to have a big 2025. The one positive is that this breed of mosquito does not transmit diseases unlike other mosquitos when they bite you. The bad news is that this breed of mosquito's bites tend to hurt more. AWESOME!

How to Help Stop the Spread of the Mosquito Population in Wichita Falls

One of the easiest things you can do is dump standing water on your property. Anywhere where natural water can collect like a bucket, flowerpots, patio furniture, bird baths as examples. Mosquitos look to lay their eggs on standing water and you dumping it into your yard can help stop those eggs from hatching on your property.

Hopefully it's not too bad this year, but with all this rain. Get ready to be swatting these things away the next few months.
