"The Unforgiven" was released as an official single from Metallica on Oct. 28, 1991, which was only a couple of weeks after its first live performance. Metallica debuted it onstage on Oct. 12 at the historic Day on the Green concert in Oakland, Calif., which featured other acts like Queensrÿche, Faith No More and Soundgarden.

On May 27, 2022, Metallica performed "The Unforgiven" for the 515th time, this time not too far from Oakland at BottleRock in the Napa Valley. The performance came in-between "Whiskey in the Jar" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and as you might expect, it was met with a lot of excitement from the festival crowd.

When "The Unforgiven" was officially released as a single, it was backed with Metallica's cover of Sweet Savage's "Killing Time," which would eventually wind up on Garage Inc.

In 2021, as part of the massive celebration around the 30th anniversary of the "Black Album," Metallica released The Blacklist which featured 53 artists covering every track on the album. "The Unforgiven" received seven different covers, ranging from artists like Cage the Elephant and Diet Cig to Moses Sumney and Flatbush Zombies.

The official music video for the single came out on Nov. 19, 1991, making it only the third music video released by Metallica.
