Marvel has found amazing success with their superhero movies (Iron Man, Thor, the Avengers just to name a few) and they're hoping that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be able to find the same success. The only problem is that not many people know about the Guardians.

So who are they? The Guardians made their first appearances as space traveling heroes in some 1960s comic books and are now hoping to make the jump to the big screen like many of their comrades already have. So what sets the Guardians apart from the other superhero teams like the Avengers?

Well first off they're in space. Plus they have a raccoon and a humanoid tree like creature on their team. That's pretty unique.

Marvel has just released the first still from the movie which features all five of the Guardians and it looks pretty bad ass. Now I've never heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy before this but after seeing the characters and the actors who are involved with the project, the movie looks like it'll be able to hold its own.

Marvel also released a synopsis of the movie which you can see below.

Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team-the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.

"To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora, and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy's fate in the balance. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures."

Going left to right in the picture above, the film will star Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Dave Bautista as The Destroyer and Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, the tree monster thing.

The film won't be in theaters until this August and so far this is the only image Marvel has released from the movie. We'll be sure to post the trailer as soon as it comes out.
