Linkin Park Debut Somber New Song ‘Looking for an Answer’ at Chester Bennington Tribute Show
Last night (Oct. 27), Linkin Park hit the stage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with a wealth of guest artists as they paid tribute to the late Chester Bennington with a special 31 song set that spanned over three hours. Among the most impactful moments of the night was a new song, "Looking for an Answer," a somber ballad performed solely by Mike Shinoda, which can be viewed above.
With a shaky voice, the vocalist addressed the crowd, speaking about how music typically gets him through tough times. While he couldn't bring himself to listen to his own band's music in the days after Bennington's death, it was actually about eight days following that he started a song inspired by what he was feeling. Shinoda introduced the song's title and brought the crowd to a hush with its barren piano melody, filling the space between chords with pensive and emotional lyrics, other times letting the light sustain of the keys disappear into the ether as silence overtook the room and had just as profound of an effect.
During his intro, Shinoda said that it has not been decided yet what Linkin Park's future will be, but he envisions the song, which is a work in progress, as being something that he would allow fans to follow through to its completion via social media to see how a song comes together, with the Hollywood Bowl performance being the infancy. However, that may be contingent on Linkin Park's plans as a group moving forward.
The Linkin Park and Friends Celebrate Life in Honor of Chester Bennington memorial concert marked the first time the members of the band had stepped onstage together since the tragic passing of Bennington on July 20 when he took his own life. Since his death, tributes have been held around the world as fans came together to remember the singer, who was one of the most influential rock musicians of the 21st century.
Bennington was voted Best Vocalist in the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards where Halestorm's Lzzy Hale accepted the award on the singer's behalf. Addressing the crowd, she became a harsh critic of cyber bullying and admitted that none of us are alone and all battle demons and vices every day. She implored everyone to come together to lift each other up instead of spreading messages of hate.
