The Texas City Where You’re Most Likely to Get Struck by Lightning
They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but this small town in Texas is known to have the most lightning strikes in the entire United States.
2024 Lightning Data is Very High in Texas
The Finnish company Vaisala Xweather just released their 2024 data on lightning strikes in America. Something Texas can brag about is being number one for most lightning strikes in the country and number two isn't even close. In 2024 over two billion lightning strikes happened across the world (2,227,370,623 to be exact). 9.4% of them happened in the United States of America.
Top Five States with the Highest Lightning Events
- Texas - 40 Million
- Florida - 15 Million
- Oklahoma - 13 Million
- Kansas - 10 Million
- Louisiana - 9 Million

If you combined the lightning strikes in the top three other states, it still does not reach Texas' 40 million lightning events for 2024. What maybe the craziest statistic that Vaisala Xweather determined is that a small town in Texas has more lightning events than anywhere else in the country.
Teague, Texas the Lightning Capital of America
If you're someone that freaks out when lightning is striking avoid the small town of Teague. In 2024, they had 735 lightning events. The next closest city in America was Orlando, Florida with 414 lightning events, which is nearly half of what Teague experienced last year. Teague just east of Waco has a population of just over three thousand people. Looking into the small town, it's not really known for a lot. However, I think they should embrace being the lightning capital of America. Every town needs a gimmick to get people to visit, so Teague congratulations on your new achievement.
