Ever heard of the legend of Drunk Tom at Lake Wichita? As much as I hate to admit it, even though I grew up in the Wichita Falls area, I only learned of it today.

I love a good ghost story / urban legend. Those are the kind of rabbit holes I can go down for hours on end. So, of course, I had to do some digging into the Drunk Tom story.

Who Was Drunk Tom?

It’s not clear when the incident happened, but the story that has been passed down over the years is that Tom was a young man who had been out for a night of hard drinking. In his inebriated state, Tom decided to go for a walk at Lake Wichita. But he was so drunk that he fell into the lake and drowned.

Since then, people have reported seeing his ghost at the spot where the incident happened. However, if you look directly at him, the ghost will vanish. Some folks have even reported hearing a whiskey bottle break in the distance. Unfortunately, I’m unable to track down where exactly the spot is.

So, I’m hoping someone who has experienced any eerie occurrences while at Lake Wichita will reach out to me and share their story. I would love to hear all about it, and who knows? I might actually muster up the courage to head out there and see for myself.
