Oklahoma Inmates Working on Portrait of Jelly Roll for New Project
An artist is traveling across Oklahoma allowing incarcerated individuals to be a part of his new portrait that just so happens to be of Jelly Roll who spent some time behind bars himself.
If you're someone that likes unique art, check out Dennis Jackson. He's known as 'The Dot Man' who draws in the style of pointillism. Which is defined as a painting technique developed by French artists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, where small, distinct dots of unmixed color are applied in patterns to form an image, relying on the viewer's eye to blend the dots into a complete picture.
Fun fact: If you have seen the movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' you have seen one of the most famous pointillism pieces ever. The scene when Cameron Frye is staring at a painting and it goes back and forth zooming in. That piece he's staring at is called 'Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' by Georges Seurat. Considered one of the most important pieces in the pointillism style.
Dennis has been working hard on a portrait of the singer known as Jelly Roll in the pointillism style. Something interesting Dennis is doing is traveling across Oklahoma and allowing prisoners to add six dots each to his portrait. In total, he wants 500 prisoners to contribute to the portrait.
Just yesterday the Oklahoma Department of Corrections shared a video of inmates at the Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in McLoud, Oklahoma adding their part to the Jelly Roll portrait. Dennis is hoping to have the project done by the spring of 2026.
Who Are Inmates Working on a Jelly Roll Portrait?
Jelly Roll, who's real name is Jason DeFord, before he made it big in the music industry spent some time behind bars. From his teens to his twenties, Jelly Roll was in and out of prison for around a decade. The charges varied from possession with intent to distribute and aggravated robbery.
With Jelly Roll's new fame, he goes to prisons across the country and shows inmates that just because they made a mistake, does not mean they cannot turn their life around. Pretty much every stop along his tour, he finds a nearby prison to hopefully be an inspiration for those who are locked up. We have many examples of him helping out prisoners if you want to check more out.
Looks like Dennis plans on giving the portrait to Jelly Roll at its completion. We will wait and see how it turns out.
