If you're going to put on your own festival, might as well do something in your set to make it extra special. For Deftones, that meant adding the rare Eros track "Smile" to their set list, giving the song its live debut.

Eros is the album that Deftones were recording at the time that late bassist Chi Cheng was involved in auto accident in 2008. While Cheng remained hospitalized in a semi-comatose state for several years, the group decided to shelve the album and start fresh with fill-in bassist Sergio Vega, eventually returning with 2010's Diamond Eyes album.

Cheng passed away in 2013, Vega eventually became a full-time member of the group, but Eros has remained unreleased to this day. In 2014, on the one-year anniversary of Cheng's death, singer Chino Moreno shared a studio version of "Smile," making it the lone track that has appeared from the album. However, the song had never been performed live, until Saturday's performance (Nov. 2) at the second annual Dia De Los Deftones festival at San Diego's Petco Park.

"This one's for my man, Cheng," Moreno can be heard telling the crowd in fan-shot video below before launching into the track. Watch a pair of fan-shot clips of the performance below.

Aside from "Smile," the Deftones set primarily featured better known favorites, with "7 Words" serving at the set closer. They did, however, perform "Romantic Dreams" for the first time since their 2013 touring of Koi No Yokan.

At present, the band has no other scheduled appearances with the exception of 2020's Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festivals. However, with a new album in the works. Moreno told NBC's San Diego affiliate that the band recorded "an album's worth" of music this past summer and have been working on it at their own pace. He added, “It’ll definitely be out next year. I’m hoping that it’ll be earlier on in the year, but I feel like once I give a definitive answer or speculate exactly when, I feel like we’ll be held to it [laughs] so I kind of want to continue on."
