Virginia Grohl, the mother of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, has a new book where she interviews the mothers of famous rock stars. Last night, she and her son promoted From Cradle to Stage: Stories From the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, by bringing along an awkward boyhood picture and his sixth grade report card.

"That was a tough year," she said. Colbert then proceeded to note that Dave received either "needs improvement" or "unsatisfactory" grades for "Respects Authority," "Is Courteous," "Accepts Responsibility," "Exercises Self-Control," "Exerts Effort," "Uses Time Wisely," "Works Neatly," "Works Accurately" and "Begins and Completes Work On Time." OK, that last one might still be true for him given that we're still waiting for news of a new album.

"Dave, we have to talk about this," Colbert quipped.

Grohl then went on to praise his mother, citing her own background as a public school teacher, for recognizing early on that he wasn't cut out for a traditional education and allowing him to quit high school to tour Europe as a member of Scream. "He was going to be playing music in Paris and in Amsterdam," she added. "I was staying behind in Fairfax County [Va.] in the classroom. I almost wanted to go with him."

He also noted that she often comes on tour with him. "She's perfectly comfortable on the road, though. I give her a laminate and play a gig and come back to the dressing room and she's having a beer with Green Day."

You can watch it all above, and be sure to stick around for the end, where Dave bolts from his seat and runs to play drums with The Late Show's house band, Jon Batiste and Stay Human.
