Dave Grohl's first stab at directing is with the documentary Sound City, and we've been seeing trailer for it for months. The big question has been when we'd be able to see the film for ourselves. Now Grohl has announced the official release date – February 2, 2013.

The documentary follows the now-closed recording studio that was birthplace to some famous albums, and dozens of artists recorded their music there. It will be screened for the first time next month at the Sundance Film Festival, then shortly after that the rest of us will get to feast our eyes on it.

Grohl recently wrote about how the idea came about in a note to fans on his Web site:

I started this project a little over a year ago with ONE of my good friends (Jim Rota from Fireball Ministry). That's right... just me, my drinking buddy, and a crazy idea that we should tell the story of a studio we had loved hanging around for years, and our heartbreak to see it close. It soon blossomed into something truly epic! [Filming has been] the most incredible experience of my life. I really feel like Sound City is my life's most important work. I hope you do too.

For just $10, you can pre-order the film for digital download here.
