One of the Largest Cockfighting Rings in Texas History was Busted
Looks like a bunch of animals have now been rescued and a lot of people have been arrested.
Cockfighting Has Been "Illegal" in Texas Since 2011
Since 2011, if you profit from a cockfight, breed cockfighting birds, or own cockfighting paraphernalia you can be charged. Before 2011, you could not be arrested for watching a cockfight in Texas. Basically, if officers became aware of a cockfight the ones running the show got arrested. Everyone else, basically just went home. Nowadays, everyone on the scene gets charged and we had a HUGE cockfight get busted in Potter County, Texas.
Potter County Sheriff's Office and Texas Game Wardens Handled the Bust
The two law enforcement departments became aware of a possible massive cockfight taking place this past weekend and upon arrival. Officers were shocked as to how big this actually was. They say typically a cockfight has between 15 to 20 birds. This organization had almost 200!
Sadly, Some Birds Did Not Survive the Fight that Night
In total over 170 roosters were saved from this cockfighting operation. According to the Texas Game Wardens, another thirteen had to be euthanized due to their injuries they had sustained during fights that night. Around fifty people were watching the fights that night, they have all been charged with a Class C Misdemeanor for watching a cockfight.
Ivan Guadelupe Herrera-Lopez Charged With Running the Fights
This guy will be facing several charges from allegedly running this operation. I am not sure if the charges are more severe with the amount of birds, but officers were shocked as to how big this guy's alleged operation was. The roosters have been taken to the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Also some of the spectators were found to have been in the United States illegally. So ICE will be deporting them as well.
