A new bill just made it's way through the Oklahoma House that would raise the age of consent in the state.

When you think of the age of consent, your average person probably thinks 18-years-old. Only eleven states in the country have an age of consent of 18-years-old. In fact, Oklahoma is in the vast majority of states in the country that currently have their age of consent at sixteen-years-old. Twenty nine states currently have the age of consent at sixteen-years old.

Oklahoma House Passes House Bill 1003

House Bill 1003 officially changes the age of consent to 18 in the state of Oklahoma. It passed unanimously in the state this past week and now moves onto the Oklahoma Senate.

"Raising the age of consent to 18 ensures that our state laws reflect the maturity and well-being of our youth, as well as upholds the morals and personal beliefs of the majority of Oklahomans," one of the bill's authors, state Rep. Jim Olsen, said in a news release. "I believe that every step we take to strengthen these protections is a step toward building a safer future for our children. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to see this bill through to its final passage."

We will wait and see if this goes all the way through. If approved, it does have an emergency clause that makes it takes place immidiatly at the approval process once signed into law.
