Though Bret Morgen’s documentary about Kurt Cobain, ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,’ still has not received an official release date, we now know that it will land on HBO next year.

‘Montage of Heck’ will be the first documentary about the late Nirvana frontman made with permission from his family. And in fact, Cobain's daughter, Frances Bean, will act as the film’s executive producer.

Morgen -- who received an Oscar nomination for his film, ‘On the Ropes’ -- began work on the documentary in 2007 and has received unparalleled access to Cobain’s archives, including the titular mix tape the singer made in 1988, ‘Montage of Heck.’ (You can see a picture of the mix tape here and listen to it here.) The documentary will feature extensive Nirvana footage, including live performances, previously unreleased songs, home movies, artwork, journals, songbooks and more.

“[O]nce I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paints, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies and over 4,000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media,” Morgen told Rolling Stone.

Stay tuned for more details as they're released.
