A Texas mother is in custody after her 2-year-old and 16-month-old children died when she left them in a hot car to "teach them a lesson".

24-year-old Cynthia Marie Randolph was arrested Friday in connection with the deaths of her two children last month. According to CNN, Randolph found her children playing in her car around noon on May 26th. When her 2-year-old daughter refused to get out of the car, Randolph reportedly locked them in to teach them a lesson, saying she believed her oldest child would be able unlock the car to get she and her brother out when they were ready to come in.

Officers were notified at 4pm that afternoon after the children were discovered, but Randolph provided them with a fake story. Randolph told investigators that the children had been playing on an enclosed patio before she noticed them missing. She said she then spent nearly 40 minutes looking for the children, eventually finding them locked in her car, which she broke the window to in an attempt to save them. However, after several interviews with the Parker County Sheriff's department, holes and variations in Randolph's story quickly led investigators to not believe her account.

After an investigation by the Texas Rangers, it was found that after Randolph locked her children in the car, she went inside and smoked some marijuana, then took a nap for a few hours. When she discovered the children were still in the car, the temperatures outside had reached the mid-90s. Randolph later admitted to breaking the car window in an attempt to make her story seem plausible.

This marks the second time in just a few weeks that a young Texas mother has been arrested for the deaths of her own children, from having left them in a hot car. Earlier this month, a 19-year-old mother in Kerville,TX was arrested after her two toddler children died from being left in the car for 15 hours while she was spending the night at a friend's house.

Randolph is facing two felony charges for causing serious bodily injury to a child.
