Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen Talks New Music, American Influences + Award Recognition

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire

These are the best of times for Volbeat, as the band is riding a serious hot streak. Part of that success is due to their ‘Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies’ disc, and there’s no doubt that album title evokes images of the American west.

Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen recently took a few minutes to speak with ‘Loudwire Nights’ host Full Metal Jackie about his American music inspirations and he also offered some info on the band’s new music and his thoughts on their recent awards recognition. Check out Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen’s chat with ‘Loudwire Nights’ host Full Metal Jackie below.

Loudwire Nights, it’s Full Metal Jackie. On the show with us, very happy to say we’ve got the one and only Michael Poulsen of Volbeat. How are you sir?

I’m fine, thank you for having me.

Obviously I’m a huge Volbeat fan as I’ve mentioned numerous times on the show. Excited for Volbeat to be back in the States. You guys are on tour now with Trivium and Digital Summer and that tour runs through May 10. Being back in the States, what is the most memorable thing you’ve ever seen on the road that ended up inspiring a song?

That’s a good question. I cannot answer that because I get inspired all the time. It can be small things or something really huge so it’s a tough question I really have to think about. It’s almost like getting the question: Which show has been the best so far? It’s a very tough question.

I know Volbeat music conjures up wild west imagery. I wonder if sometimes when you’re touring in the States, if you watch the scenery in those parts of the country and maybe get inspiration for any of your songs.

It happens every day. Today we are in New Mexico and before we were at the venue I was looking out the window, that was inspiring too.

You grew up in Denmark loving American music, such as Elvis, Metallica and Johnny Cash. Does that make American fans loving Volbeat so much more special to you?

I don’t know. I appreciate the fans we have everywhere. If we can share the love for bands like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Metallica that’s great. We’re definitely inspired by that and if our fans like that music too, that’s beautiful.

What’s some of the music you’re listening to currently that’s inspiring you?

Very much into Biffy Clyro at the moment. Really like those guys, they’re really good. Solid album. Very talented and a really talented live band too. I love a lot of those record. I just bought the new Hank III. Then I’m listening — just about all the albums, Suicidal Angel. They’re really cool, I love what they’re doing. I bought a CD with a Brazilian band. It’s girls called Nervosa — it’s really cool.

‘Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies’ is out in stores now. It’s been out now for about a year, are you already thinking about the next album?

Oh yeah, we played a small snippet of a new song yesterday in Denver. So I’m trying to write new songs right now, I’ve been home for a couple of weeks. I’ve been writing a little bit. Right now we are rehearsing two new songs in sound checks. During this tour we have a plan that we would play one of the songs from start to end. Yesterday they got a little snippet of something new. Yeah, I’m definitely in writing mode.

Do you find it easier to write on the road as opposed to when you’re back home?

No, it’s definitely more easy to write at home, I feel comfortable about that. But again, you can get inspiration on the road you cannot get at home. So it works pretty well both ways. When I sit down and put all the pieces together I need to be home. But, I’m proud that I can be inspired on the road and bring stuff with me home and then put all those pieces together.

Michael, this has been a huge year for Volbeat. Congratulations, you guys recently won an Echo award out in Germany, which I know is a big deal. Last year you guys got nominated for a Grammy here in the US for the song that you did with King Diamond. Did you ever in a million years think that after just being introduced to the US in these last couple of years that you’d have a Grammy nomination at this point?

Let me put it this way, I never in my entire life think about awards or Grammys. That’s not the reason I’m doing what I’m doing. So, it’s very normally, it doesn’t do anything to me. I know it means something, somewhere but at the end of the day that’s not the reason I’m what I’m doing. I like the recognition from the fans. If the fans have something to say about an award, I’m proud to receive an award. If it’s just a penalty, I don’t think too much about it.

Full Metal Jackie with Michael Poulsen of Volbeat. See the band out on tour, they’ll be out through the middle of May. Had you guys toured with Trivium before?

No we haven’t toured with Trivium before. We had some few shows on different festivals. These guys are great, great guys. Make good records. It’s a great honor for Volbeat having them on the road.

And they’re the nicest dudes, too.

I agree.

I appreciate you being on the show, Michael. I’m a long time fan, I wish you the best on the tour. See you soon.

Hope so, thank you very much again Jackie.
