Vinnie Paul on Pantera Reunion: If Eddie Van Halen Died, Would You Ask Zakk Wylde to Fill In?
It’s no secret Pantera fans want some sort of reunion. Although ‘Dimebag’ Darrell passed away nearly 10 years ago, the idea of Zakk Wylde filling Dime’s spot has been brought up more times than we can imagine. Pantera / Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul has nixed Pantera “reunion” possibilities time and time again, but in a new interview, Paul expressed his feeling that fans are being selfish with the constant demand.
Why is it that Pantera fans and journalists keep bringing up a Pantera reunion featuring Zakk Wylde when Vinnie Paul hasn’t budged an inch? Maybe it’s desperation, maybe some think Vinnie will change his tune, or maybe it’s the desire to break the biggest metal news story of the last decade. No matter what the reason, Vinnie Paul sees much of it as selfish.
“People are selfish, man,” Vinnie tells EMP Rockinvasion. “They want what they want; they don’t care what you want. And it’s unfortunate that people go, ‘Oh, wow, man, they can get Zakk Wylde to jump up there on stage and it’s Pantera again.’ No, it’s not, you know. It’s not that simple. If Eddie Van Halen was to get shot in the head four times next week, would everybody be going, ‘Hey, man, Zakk, go play for Van Halen. Just call it Van Halen.’ You see what I’m saying? I mean, it’s really selfish for people to think that, and it’s stupid. It’s not right at all.”
VInnie was also asked if he felt pressure to live up to Pantera’s legacy with Hellyeah. “Never, because it’s a different band,” Vinnie answers. “If you played for a soccer team and you get traded to another soccer team, you’re gonna kick ass for that soccer team just like you did the other one. You may not achieve the same goals, or you may achieve higher goals; you never know. But that’s what happens when you change teams and do different things.”
