Today we celebrate one of the greatest creations known to man - the cheeseburger. Honestly we celebrate it almost everyday, but today, on National Cheeseburger Day, we make it official - cheeseburger: we salute you.

Now before we decide who makes the best cheeseburger in the Falls, let's find out where exactly the cheeseburger came from.

The actual hamburger patty originated back in the 11th Century when Mongols traveled to Hamburg Germany with flat patties of meat. From there it spread to New York where the meat patties became known as Hamburg Steak - or Hamburger.

Now figuring out who was the first to put the hamburger patty in-between two pieces of bread is a little more tricky.

Some say that Walter Anderson, the founder of the White Castle chain, should get credit for making the first hamburger back in 1916, but we know that the hamburger was around much earlier than that using two pieces of normal bread. Another theory is that the hamburger comes form a Wisconsin fair in 1885 where flattened meatballs were placed between two pieces of bread and sold - we just call that a meatball sandwich though.  Hamburg, New York likes to claim credit for the first hamburger and celebrates 'Burgerfest' each year. New Haven, Connecticut says that a small diner called 'Louis Lunch' invented the hamburger as a quick meal for busy office workers back in 1900. It seems that just about every U.S. state could make a similar claim.

But who was the first to put the beloved ooey-gooey cheese on a burger? A Hamburger with no cheese is like a chicken fried steak with no gravy - it just ain't right!

The birth of the first cheeseburger is said to have come from a chef name Lionel Sternberger from Pasadena, California between 1924 and 1926.  The story goes that a passing homeless man asked sternberger to add a piece of cheese to his hamburger order. Sternberger liked the idea, and added the cheeseburger to his main menu. 'Kaelin's Restaurant' in Louisville, Kentucky claims they invented the cheeseburger in 1934, but ultimately it was the Humpty-Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado that was awarded the trademark for the name 'cheeseburger' in 1935.

We won't even begin to figure out whose idea it was to put bacon on a cheeseburger, but God bless whoever it was!

All that said, most of us aren't to concerned with where the cheeseburger came from, but more so with where we can get the BEST one. So let's find out. Wichita Falls has a plethora of places to pick up a juicy cheeseburger, but which one is your favorite? Answer in the poll below:
