The state of California has been looking into the finances of Nadya Suleman, a.k.a. Octomom, and she’s now being charged with welfare fraud, a felony which may put her behind bars for up to five years.

As a CNN report states, Suleman is allowed welfare benefits provided she makes under $119,000 a year, but it is estimated that she made over $200,000 in 2012. The mother of fourteen claims that food stamps are the only assistance she has been receiving, and though it is $2,000, it only covers about half of her food costs.

Authorities say that Suleman failed to report at least $30,000. "While applying for public aid, the mother of 14 children allegedly failed to disclose that she was also getting checks for personal appearances and residuals from videos," the district attorney's office said.

The specific public appearances and videos were not mentioned, but it's no secret that "Octomom" has posed topless for several publications, took a twirl on the stripper pole, recorded a single, as well as appeared in at least one adult film.

Suleman was famously dubbed “Octomom” in 2009 when she gave birth to octuplets, but much of the public became bitter when they discovered that she became pregnant through in vitro fertilization, already had six children, was unemployed, and on public assistance.

While some feel that she should most certainly be aided by welfare programs, others believe she put herself into this situation and should have been able to support the children all along.
